The American Viola Society congratulates composer Qi Jing for being named the winner of the 2016 4th Biennial Maurice Gardner Composition Competition.
Qi Jing’s composition Sonata for solo viola, Threnody, was selected from an extremely strong pool of forty-nine scores submitted to the competition.
The mission of the Gardner Competition is to identify and promote important new works featuring the viola, as well as honor the legacy of prolific composer Maurice Gardner (1909-2002).
Qi Jing’s winning score was performed at the AVS-sponsored American Viola Festival 2016, at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music on June 10th.
The Committee of Mara Gibson (University of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance), Michael Palumbo (Weber State), and Chair, Michael Hall (VanderCook College of Music), chose Qi Jing’s composition because it best exemplified the mission of the Gardner Competition.
The Committee acknowledges the deep commitment and dedication of all the composers who graciously and enthusiastically entered their scores to the competition. Thank you for submitting your compositions! Your talent and dedication give further voice to the instrument we so deeply love – the viola.
