The 4th Annual Violafest LA

    Bring your violas and your friends to LA’s only celebration of the coolest instrument around!
    This year’s event features a masterclass with USC viola professor Donald McInnes and a variety of new special topics classes taught by local private and school teachers and members of the LA Philharmonic and LA Chamber Orchestra.
    We are excited to feature performances by local viola ensembles from:

    Elemental Strings

    Santa Monica High School

    Long Beach Polytechnic High School

    Renaissance Arts Academy

    University of Southern California

    and the Southern California Viola Choir

    All participants will join together to perform the world premiere of Bratsche Pack, a large viola ensemble piece composed by Robert Anderson.
    ViolaFest is generously sponsored by Metzler Violins, Benning Violins, Old Town Music in
    Pasadena, and the Southern California Viola Society.
    Who:  All violists ages 9-18 are welcome regardless of level!

    About the Artist:
    Jonathan Moerschel is the violist of the Calder Quartet, in residence at The Colburn School’s Conservatory of Music.  He is also an adjunct professor of viola and chamber music at Azusa Pacific University.  He received both his Bachelors and Masters degrees in viola performance from USC, a Professional Studies Certificate from the Colburn School of Music, and an Artist Diploma from The Juilliard School in String Quartet Studies.  He plays on a Gasparo Da Salo viola on loan from the Stradivari Society.

Alturas Duo Receive Award

    The Alturas Duo, comprised of HCD Faculty Members Carlos Boltes (viola) & Scott Hill (guitar)  won the 2010 CMA/ASCAP (Chamber Music America/ American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) Awards for innovative programming and commitment to featuring new works.

    The Alturas Duo, who are former Hartt graduate students, are about to receive a very important Adventurous Programming Award from CMA/ASCAP (see below). The duo is comprised of Carlos Boltes, viola/charango and Scott Hill, guitar. They both did four years of graduate studies at Hartt earlier this decade, first doing individual degrees on viola and guitar (during which they formed the duo) and then doing a 2-year graduate chamber music residency program working with the members of the Emerson and Miami string quartets.

    CMA/ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming
    Presented annually to ensembles and presenter/festivals for innovative public programming of contemporary music for small ensembles, these awards are given jointly by CMA and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). The awards presentation will take place at CMA’s National Conference in New York City (January 15-17, 2010).

NPR Program – “Old Masters”

Hello Friends,

We would just like to let you know that Manny was recently interviewed by Marcie Sillman for the NPR program, ‘Old Masters’.

His interview will be aired on Seattle’s NPR station KUOW 94.9 FM this Friday at 6:40 am., then in the 2pm hour, and then on Saturday afternoon…I’m not sure of the time for that.
