Orchestral Excerpts Competition

The AVS is pleased to announce its first Orchestral Excerpt Competition for violists aged 18 to 28.  Orchestral musicians  face an increasingly competitive job market. This competition is intended to help prepare violists for a future orchestral career.

Materials for the competition are due March 15, 2013. The preliminary candidates will be judged by a panel of AVS board members with finalists announced by April 15. Finalists will be judged by a panel of orchestral violists with the winners announced by June 1. All candidates will receive written comments from the judges regarding their performances.

Joseph de Pasquale Grand Prize: A paid week with an ICSOM orchestra (the San Antonio
Symphony)  including transportation and lodging, underwritten by friends of Joseph de Pasquale
Second Prize: $500 and an online lesson with a Principal Violist
Third Prize: $250 and an online lesson with a Principal Violist

The required repertoire for candidates is listed below and should be performed in the order listed below in one continuous audio recording for each round, with pauses/stop recording allowed between excerpts. Please exclude any multimeasure rests longer than three measures when recording the excerpts. All candidates must submit the required, unedited audio recordings along with a résumé, the name of a recommender, and entry fee ($65 for AVS members, $115 for non-members, which includes a one-year membership in the AVS). Preliminary round:

  • Concerto: first movement of Bartók Concerto, Walton Concerto, or Hindemith Der Schwanendreher*
  • Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 6: 1st Movement: mm. 19 – 74
  • Brahms, Symphony No. 4: 4th Movement: [B] to [D]
  • Shostakovich, Symphony No. 5: 1st Movement: 1 m. after [15] to [17]
  • Mendelssohn, A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Scherzo: from [E] to 3 mm. after [I]
  • Strauss, Don Juan: Beginning to 5 mm. before [D]

Final round:

  • Concerto: first movement of Bartók Concerto, Walton Concerto, or Hindemith Der Schwanendreher* (Note: Candidates may upload the same audio recording that was supplied for the preliminary round)
  • Bach: one movement of a Cello Suite
  • Beethoven, Symphony No. 5:  2nd Movement: Beginning to m. 75 and mm. 98 – 106
  • Ravel, Daphnis et Chloé, Suite No. 2:  mm. 158 – 170 and mm. 212 – 216
  • Prokofiev, Symphony No. 1 “Classical”: 1st Movement: 8 mm. before [I] to [J] and 4th Movement: [H] to end
  • Strauss, Don Juan: Beginning to 5 mm. before [D] (Note: Candidates may upload the same audio recording that was supplied for the preliminary round)
