Marcus R. Pyle, Ph.D.

Marcus PyleMarcus R. Pyle, Ph.D., serves as the Franco Professor of Humanities, Artistic Director of the Davidson Concert Series, and Assistant Professor of Music at Davidson College. Before joining Davidson, he held positions at Tufts University and MIT. He earned degrees in viola performance from the Royal Academy of Music and was a C.V. Starr scholarship recipient at the Juilliard School. Additionally, he was a Guarini Fellow in Comparative Literature at Dartmouth College, pursued graduate study at Columbia University, and obtained his Ph.D. in Historical Musicology from New York University.

Pyle has performed with orchestras including the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, Opera Carolina, Dallas Chamber Orchestra, Kensington Symphony Orchestra, Las Colinas Symphony, Garland Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Arlington, Du Bois Orchestra of Harvard University, Charlotte Strings Collective, among others. He has performed chamber music with the Locrian String Ensemble, Sullivan Quartet, Quartet131, and Chamber Music for All.

He serves on the Board of the Dvorak American Heritage Association and served as President of the American Musicological Society-SE from 2022-2024.
