Sound Setup for Violists Workshop: Sat, Nov 16

Healthy setup is a fundamental and perennial issue for violists, and the AVS is proud to announce Sound Setup for Violists: A webinar exploring upper extremity anatomy, biomechanics, and how to find a viola setup that works for both you and your students.

Are you frustrated with your violin or viola setup? Are you constantly making modifications without finding something that works, or without knowing what you’re looking for? Do you have a hard time helping your students with chin rests and shoulder rests? Are you interested in learning more about anatomy and upper string setup? Then this webinar is for you!

This two hour webinar, led by physical therapist Dr. Janice Ying and violist and movement educator Kayleigh Miller, will explore common issues related to upper string setup, including a comparison of different styles of shoulder rests and chin rests, and how to go about the transition process.

Janice Ying headshotDr. Janice Ying is a board certified orthopedic physical therapist and the founder of Opus Physical Therapy and Performance based in Los Angeles, CA. Prior to her career in physical therapy, she received her degree in Piano Performance and Music Education from Pepperdine University with an emphasis in Violin Performance. She received her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the University of Southern California and has been practicing for over a decade. She is internationally recognized as an expert in the field of Performing Arts Medicine, particularly with developing injury prevention and rehabilitation strategies for instrumental musicians. Dr. Ying has recently been awarded the 2021 Emerging Leader Award by the American Physical Therapy Association for her contributions towards advancing the field of Performing Arts Medicine in Physical Therapy. She currently serves as Adjunct Instructor of Clinical Physical Therapy at the University of Southern California and is a wellness faculty member at Colburn School. 

Fb2a6808 EditKayleigh Miller is a violist and movement educator based in Seattle, WA. She previously was a member of the San Antonio Symphony and the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, and is a current member of the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra. She has additionally performed with the Britt Festival Orchestra, Oregon Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Seattle Opera, the Cincinnati Symphony, the Fort Worth Symphony, and National Arts Centre Orchestra. She received her B.M. from the New England Conservatory and her M.M. from the Eastman School, where she studied with Carol Rodland and Roger Tapping. She additionally holds certifications in Body Mapping, Pilates, yoga, personal training, and works with musicians and non-musicians to move better and more pain-free.
